Robert Maxwell was a visionary ceramics designer and artist who created some of the most iconic pieces of pottery during the mid-20th century. He had a brief and highly controversial collaboration with Treasure Craft (Pottery Craft USA) during the late 60's, a company known for its innovative and high-quality ceramics, where he developed a glazing technique of abstract washes and layered browns and grays that became a signature look.
This style of modern pottery has influenced many and his glazing techniques can be found on a variety of pieces such as vases, wine carafes and sake sets, and teacups. As he rarely signed his pieces for Treasure/Pottery Craft, it is difficult to know which are truly his and which are his influence of design but none the less, this style of pottery is very collectable to MCM lovers!

Remembered for whimsical sculptures & creations such as the "Beasties", Maxwell was also known for using bold overlapping geometric patterns and was heavily influenced by the Bauhaus movement, which shows in his work.

It's not just his designs that make Maxwell a Mid-Century icon, his use of glazes and techniques was ahead of its time. He was one of the first to use a technique called "Rutile glaze" which gives his pieces a unique texture and depth and his layering of geometric shapes and earth-tone hues is recognizably his, which makes these iconic pieces so sought after.
