In 1927, Frank Lloyd Wright created a series of 12 monthly cover designs for Liberty Magazine, each inspired by the seasons. A little ahead of its time, Wright’s bold geometric designs were deemed too radical by the magazine’s publishers, who ultimately passed on the series. The presentation drawings were returned to Wright and later became the inspiration for interpretations in a variety of media.
Each design showcases Wright’s signature approach to geometry, using simple tools—a T-square, triangle, and compass—to create lively, rhythmic compositions.
At the center of this Christmas design, concentric squares create an abstract bird’s-eye view of a Christmas tree. Geometric shapes connected to the tree become playful ornaments, while the remaining shapes transform into colorful, beautifully wrapped gifts.
